AI-generated summary

An unidentified male body was discovered in a partially submerged canoe in the Timor Sea, approximately 200 nautical miles north-northwest of Darwin on 6 March 2003. The fishing vessel crew photographed the body but did not recover it. Despite subsequent search efforts by Coastwatch and Northern Territory Police, the body and canoe were lost due to prevailing weather conditions. An inquest was held as mandated by the Coroners Act for deaths of unknown identity. The coroner was unable to establish the deceased's identity, time and place of death, cause of death, or circumstances surrounding the death due to insufficient evidence and the body's recovery failure. This case highlights challenges in maritime death investigations when bodies cannot be recovered and identified.
