FORM 37 Rule 60(1)
FINDING INTO DEATH WITH INQUEST Section 67 of the Coroners Act 2008
Court reference: 4139/10 In the Coroners Court of Victoria at Melbourne I, IAIN TRELOAR WEST, Deputy State Coroner having investigated the death of: Details of deceased:
Surname: YUREKTURK
Firstname: NURAY
Address: 38 MacGowan Avenue, Glen Huntly, Victoria 3163
AND having held an inquest in relation to this death on 13th July, 2011 at Melbourne
find that the identity of the deceased was NURAY YUREKTURK and death occurred on 28th October, 2010 at Alfred Hospital, 55 Commercial Road, Melbourne, Victoria 3004
from la. SEPSIS AND RENAL FAILURE SECONDARY TO A PERINEPHRIC ABCESS
In the following circumstances:
- Nuray Yurekturk, aged 39 years, was of female gender and resided at shared supported accommodation located at 38 MacGowan Ave, Glen Huntly, with this facility being run by SCOPE, a not for profit organisation providing services to people with disabilities. Ms Yurekturk’s past medical history included quadriplegia, cerebral palsy, epilepsy and scoliosis.
She had been a client of SCOPE for over 23 years, as her condition restricted to a wheel chair and as she was unable to verbally communicate.
- On the 23rd of October 2010, staff noticed a raised area of skin on her lower back/ hip region when assisting her to dress and arranged for a doctor to examine her. Upon examination, it was believed to be a renal abscess, and accordingly, Ms Yurekturk was taken to the Emergency Department at the Alfred Hospital for further assessment and investigations, A subsequent CT scan identified a large right perinepheric abscess, with further investigations identifying sepsis and acute kidney failure.

-
On the 24th October 2010, the abscess was operated on and drained and a second operation was planned for the 26th October, however, this had to be cancelled due to high levels of potassium and Ms Yurekturk’s worsening condition, Despite ongoing management, her condition continued to deteriorate and on the 27th October, a meeting was arranged between the consultant urologist and Ms Yurekturk’s sister and parents. Following discussion as to the poor prognosis and a further meeting with the urology registrar, the decision was made to implement palliative care. Ms Yurekturk subsequently died at 2:25pm on the 28th October 2010, in the presence of family and a representative from her residential care facility.
-
I find that Nuray Yurekturk died from natural causes and that her treatment and care was within the parameters of reasonable health care management.
