Cause of death

Aspiration pneumonia in the setting of acute myocardial infarction in a man with dialysis dependent end stage renal failure

AI-generated summary

Laurence Allen, a 66-year-old man with quadraplegia, end-stage renal failure requiring dialysis, and cardiac disease, died of aspiration pneumonia following acute myocardial infarction. He was an inmate at Port Phillip Prison with multiple comorbidities. After initial hospitalization in February 2008 for acute MI and atrial fibrillation, he was discharged back to prison. He was readmitted when his condition deteriorated, and a brain tumour was subsequently diagnosed. When aspiration pneumonia developed in March, he refused antibiotics and active treatment was withdrawn. The case highlights challenges in managing complex medical conditions in custodial settings and the importance of appropriate monitoring and intervention in patients with multiple comorbidities and reduced mobility.
