AI-generated summary

John Mackenzie, a 50-year-old man with Down's syndrome, severe intellectual disability, and end-stage renal failure, died in a residential care facility operated by the Department of Human Services. He had been recently discharged from Angliss Hospital on a palliative pathway following admission for pneumonia and chronic renal failure. He was found unresponsive by carers and could not be resuscitated. The coroner determined the death was from natural causes (complications of end-stage renal failure) with no suspicious circumstances. The coroner was satisfied that medical treatment, management, and care provided were reasonable and appropriate. This case demonstrates appropriate end-of-life care management in a patient with multiple comorbidities in a supported residential setting.
