Michael Keith Graham died in remote Western Australia, with the coroner's findings emphasising the importance of safety education for prospectors working in isolated locations. The case highlights the critical role of personal location beacons (PLBs) and communication devices in enabling rescue in remote areas. Key clinical lessons include the necessity for prospectors to carry reliable communication equipment, maintain contact protocols with others, and understand heat stress management in remote environments. The coroner made recommendations to the Department of Mines and Petroleum to enhance safety education for prospectors, including mandatory information about PLB use and remote travel hazards. Dear Ms Wright

INQUEST INTO CIRCUMSTANCES SURROUNDING THE DEATH OF MICHAEL KEITH GRAHAM - ROLE OF THE DEPARTMENT OF MINES AND PETROLEUM

IN EDUCATING PROSPECTORS

Thank you for your letter dated 13 January 2014 regarding the recommendations made at the Inquest into the death of Michael Keith Graham.

The safety of prospectors and other persons involved in exploration or prospecting activities in remote parts of Western Australia is an important issue.

The Department of Mines and Petroleum (DMP) has a number of publications targeted at prospectors dealing with various matters, including rights and obligations while prospecting, safety considerations, the dangers inherent in remote travel and how to manage heat stress.

DMP will ensure that any future reprint of these publications provides relevant information regarding the use of Personal Location Beacons (PLB’s). DMP will also include specific advice regarding the use of PLB’s in its regular, annual media campaign which targets prospectors and persons engaged in prospecting activities.

DMP will advise the WA Police of these changes and establish a process to review their effectiveness.

Yours sincerely
